Sports games aren’t everyone’s cup of Gatorade, so we needed to consider our approach when booking E3 preview appointments for brutal, NFL parody arcade football game, Mutant Football League: Dynasty Edition.
Our core tactic was to identify unique aspects of the game that would appeal to various media verticals. For instance, the new Dynasty Edition is launching for the Nintendo Switch at retail, so we put a lot of focus there – everyone is hungry for more Switch content, and there’s a dearth of football games for the platform.
We also worked the horror angle (there’s gore galore), and retro impact, since the game is a reboot of the original Mutant League Football on the Sega Genesis. Once we rounded out our target list with some sports-interest sites, we were ready to go!
Leading into E3, we alerted media about some new content that would be playable for the first time on the Switch. This helped generate some more interest for hands-on appointments at the show and garnered initial coverage with popular sites such as ComicBook.com and Nintendo Life, which didn’t hurt! We secured previews and interviews with nearly 50 individual press and influencers, thanks to our dedicated pre-E3 outreach and aggressive (non-threatening, we swear) pull-ins from people walking by.
We locked in tons of preview coverage, with outlets including prominent PlayStation interest site TrueAchievements and well-known gaming site Hardcore Gamer. Hardcore Gamer also loved the preview so much that the editorial team considered Mutant Football League for their E3 2018 Best Sports Game Award! We also setup some fun interviews in various formats, including filmed videos with Neoseeker and Nintendo World Report.
After a kickass showing at the convention, we wanted to keep the momentum rolling once media had a chance to recover from the post-E3 haze. We followed-up our previews with the official retail edition announcement in early July, locking in coverage spanning our various verticals.
With news placements on sites such as consumer outlet Paste Magazine; major gaming sites Polygon and VGChartz; platform-specific gaming sites such as Nintendo Everything, PlayStation LifeStyle and TheXboxHub; and top horror interest site Bloody Disgusting – to name a few – we celebrated with our victorious endzone dance. There are no coverage links for that, so you’ll have to take our word for it.
