Guiding Indie Cyberpunk, Disjunction, Through a Pandemic

Our long-time partner, UK-based publisher Sold Out, has been on a roll lately, releasing a wide variety of highly engaging and well-received indie games (check out our blog post for No Straight Roads). When our friends across the pond approached us once again to help launch their upcoming Cyberpunk stealth-action RPG Disjunction, we were absolutely stoked to lead the charge. But, and this is a big but, given the current state of the world in “the year that must not be named,” we had to figure out alternatives to get this dystopian-themed game in front of press during a pandemic.

Through our previous work, ranging from AAA to indie games on every platform you can name, we knew that hands-on experiences are a tried-and-true method for proper exposure. At the beginning of 2020 (yeah, we said it!), PAX East was the perfect place to showcase the game. We helped Sold Out meet with dozens of media and we scored articles with numerous gaming outlets, including GameSpot, Gamer Escape, Noisy Pixel, Dread XP, and many more.

And then 2020 got dicey. The pandemic went into full swing and took E3 and other hands-on events with it. But thanks to our endless media Rolodex (erm, email contacts), we found out that several gaming press were planning their own E3 style showcases. Sounded like a perfect opportunity to show off Disjunction! By June, we secured features with Shacknews and The Escapist’s Indie Showcase, which was picked up by the biggest Nintendo outlet, Nintendo Life, along with additional Nintendo sites Nintendo World Report and Switchaboo.

The pandemic wasn’t done with Disjunction though – Sold Out had to move the launch date  which impacted our launch plans quite significantly but once we finally confirmed the official launch date for late-January, we hit the ground running. Heavy review outreach led to more than 30 hits from tier-one to tier-three media ranging from gaming, business and geek verticals to date. We used our strong connections and relationships with media to get them to check out the game, resulting in amazing hits such as this Forbes review where the reviewer called the game an “early contender for indie game of the year.”

2020 definitely made Disjunction’s campaign a little trickier due to the pandemic. However, through our well-established media contacts and “quick-on-our-feet” thinking, we were able to go above and beyond for the dystopian cyberpunk game.
