Tens of millions of gamers around the world tune in to The Game Awards each year to witness their favorite games and developers take home some of the industry’s most coveted awards. For 505 Games and Remedy Entertainment, The Game Awards were a gold-plated cap on an already stellar year, and we were stoked to attend the awards in-person with them.
Control is racking up quite a collection of game of the year awards from individual media outlets (we’ll have more on that in a blog post later), so coming into The Game Awards the surreal action game was a clear favorite for many categories. Nominated for eight awards, including some of the most prestigious categories such as Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Performance and Game of the Year, Control was prominently featured several times throughout the night.
While the focus for The Game Awards is on the development team (and rightly so), it’s important to note that a game’s PR campaign is still a key part of the nomination process. According to the award show’s selection process, nominees are chosen by an international jury of 80 media and influencer outlets renowned for their sharp critical analysis. As the primary liaisons between games and media, our combined work with 505 Games’ and Remedy’s PR teams helped impress enough media to make Control one of the most highlighted games of the night. Turns out, all those long hours leading into industry events, preview and review campaigns, really do pay off for the publishers and developers!
Getting to be at The Game Awards sitting right beside our friends at 505 Games was an absolute honor and we made damn sure to make the most of it. Seeing the Control team take the stage to accept their well-deserved win for Best Art Direction is definitely something we’re not soon to forget. We probably won’t scrub our minds of seeing Vin Diesel, Elon Musk, Grimes, Green Day and videogame-hero-of-the-people Reggie Fils-Aime either!
What a night. What a year. Congratulations to everyone involved in the long road to Control’s big night at The Game Awards.
